Trench before the rain: Chennai extends road cuts to October 15 as residents fear open pits will flood

The Greater Chennai Corporation has extended road-cut permission to October 15 to finish stormwater and pipeline work, a month past the usual deadline. Residents warn unfinished trenches could become flood and accident hazards when the monsoon arrives.

  1. 20 Nov 1916 — The South Indian Liberal Federation is founded at Victoria Public Hall, Madras, by C. Natesa Mudaliar with T. M. Nair, P. Theagaraya Chetty and Alamelu Mangai Thayarammal.
  2. Dec 1916 — The 'Non-Brahmin Manifesto' is issued.
  3. 26 Feb 1917 — First issue of the English daily Justice, with T. M. Nair as honorary editor. The party comes to be known by its newspaper's name.
  4. Dec 1920 — After the first elections under dyarchy, A. Subbarayalu Reddiar becomes the first First Minister of Madras Presidency.
  5. 1 Apr 1921 — Women in Madras Presidency are allowed to vote, among the first in British India.
