At least eight students drown in the sea off Diveagar beach in Maharashtra
Eight teenagers from a private coaching academy in Pune drowned off Diveagar beach in Raigad district on Thursday after misjudging the tides. Police said 48 students and teachers were on the picnic trip.

At least eight students drowned in the sea off Maharashtra's coast on Thursday, in one of the deadliest picnic-day tragedies in the state in recent memory.
The eight teenagers were part of a private coaching academy from Pune and had travelled to Diveagar beach in Raigad district, about 170 km from Mumbai, according to news agency ANI and local media. A total of 48 students and teachers were on the trip.
"On visiting the beach, they had ventured into the sea and had misjudged the tides, due to which they drowned," local police told The Indian Express. Search and rescue operations were under way.
The tragedy comes amid a string of drowning incidents along the Konkan coast, where rough seas and strong currents catch visitors unawares. Authorities have repeatedly urged visitors to heed lifeguard warnings and avoid entering the water at unguarded stretches.
