Strikes on the eve of October 7: Gaza counts its dead as the UN pleads for a permanent ceasefire
Israeli strikes killed Palestinians in Gaza on Tuesday, a day before the third anniversary of the October 7 attacks, as the UN Secretary-General urged that the ceasefire become permanent.

Israeli strikes killed at least two Palestinians in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, health officials said, one near Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza City and another in a separate strike nearby. The Israeli military said the strikes targeted militants.
The deaths came a day before the third anniversary of the Hamas-led October 7 attack on southern Israel, which killed about 1,200 people and saw 251 hostages taken to Gaza.
Palestinian authorities say more than 74,000 people have been killed in Israel's assault since then. Gaza health officials say at least 1,400 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire since last October's ceasefire.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for the ceasefire to become permanent, for humanitarian assistance at scale, and for respect for international law. He said the brief ceasefire had brought some relief but not security or a credible path to recovery.
Humanitarian agencies warn that winter is approaching for thousands of displaced families in flood-prone sites and damaged buildings, while food assistance faces funding shortfalls.
Israel says Hamas has been rearming in violation of the ceasefire. Hamas denies rebuilding its arsenal and accuses Israel of undermining the deal. Between those claims, civilians continue to endure conditions the UN chief described as intolerable.
