Two workers killed in soil collapse during farm well construction in Tiruvannamalai
Two workers were killed when soil collapsed during farm-well construction in Tiruvannamalai district — the latest in a series of unsafe-site deaths across Tamil Nadu.
Two workers were killed when soil caved in on them while they were constructing a farm well in Tiruvannamalai district, in yet another tragedy exposing the deadly informality of manual excavation work in Tamil Nadu.
Details of the site and the workers' employer were limited in initial reports. The collapse buried the two men under loose soil during digging work; both died at the spot. Police are expected to register a case and probe whether basic safety norms were followed at the site.
The deaths add to a grim recent record of workers killed on unsafe sites across the state. In September, 35-year-old wage labourer R. Vinod Kumar was killed when the wall of a dilapidated house collapsed on him during demolition work in Ranipet. Earlier, nine workers from Assam died when a steel arch collapsed at the BHEL Ennore thermal power construction site — an accident that drew compensation of Rs 10 lakh per family from the state government.
Farm wells, trenches and unshored pits are among the most dangerous workplaces in rural Tamil Nadu: cave-ins are sudden, escape is near-impossible, and the labour is usually arranged through informal contractors who provide no protective equipment and little accountability. The victims of such accidents are almost always daily-wage earners whose families are left with neither income nor, too often, compensation.
It was not immediately clear whether the state government had announced relief for the families. The Justice will update this story as details emerge.
